Dunedin Cycleway – Everything You Need to Know
The Otago Harbour Cycle Loop (Te Aka Ōtākou – The Otago Vine) is one of Dunedin’s most scenic cycling experiences, linking Port Chalmers and Portobello around beautiful Otago Harbour. The main loop is approximately 32 km, mostly flat, paved and off-road, making it suitable for a wide range of cyclists.
How long does it take?
Allow around 2–4 hours to cycle the full loop, depending on your pace, wind conditions, photos, café stops and other stops along the way. A moderately fit rider travelling without stops may complete it in around 2–2½ hours, but it is worth allowing extra time so you are not rushing.
Is the Dunedin Cycleway flat?
Yes. The harbour route is mostly flat, sealed and easy riding, with a few short slopes. The route is particularly scenic, following the edge of Otago Harbour through coastal bays, beaches, working harbour areas and small communities. There are some hills if you continue beyond Portobello towards Taiaroa Head.
The Port To Port Bike Ferry
Rachel's Port To Port Bike Ferry is the key link that allows you to complete the Otago Harbour Cycle Loop. Take your bicycle aboard between Port Chalmers and Portobello, crossing the harbour in approximately 10–15 minutes. The crossing is a mini harbour experience in itself, with commentary about the harbour, boats, history and wildlife. Bookings are essential ti make sure you dont miss out. make sure you book direct using this exact web address porttoport.co.nz
Book the ferry ahead of time, especially on busy days, as departures operate to a timetable and the ferry leaves on time. Current regular Port Chalmers departures include 9:30am, 11:50am, 12:55pm and 3:00pm, with additional sailings available during busy periods or on request. Portobello departures include 12:35pm, 1:15pm and 3:15pm, again with additional services at busy times. Check the booking page for availability on your chosen date.
Bike Hire & E-Bike Rental
Don’t have your own bike? Dunedin has several local bike rental businesses offering different types of bikes and services. You can find standard bikes, e-bikes, mountain bikes and children's bikes, with some businesses also offering bike delivery, trailers and other family options.
Some rental businesses are located close to the cycle route, while others can deliver bikes to you. It is worth checking opening hours, availability and whether your chosen bike is suitable for the full 32 km loop.
Weather & What to Bring
Dunedin weather can change quickly, particularly around the harbour. Wind can make a noticeable difference to your riding time, even on a mostly flat route. Check the forecast before you leave and dress in comfortable layers, with a windproof or waterproof jacket available. A water bottle, charged phone and suitable footwear are also recommended.
A good tip is to allow extra time on windy or wet days, particularly if you have a ferry departure to meet.
Cafés, Food & Places to Stop
One of the best things about cycling the Otago Harbour is that you can take your time and stop along the way. There are cafés, pubs, restaurants and attractions on both sides of the harbour.
Popular options include Carey’s Bay Historic Hotel, with harbour views and meals, while Glenfalloch Gardens has a café set within its beautiful woodland gardens. Macandrew Bay also offers a pleasant place to stop, with the Duck Café close to the beach.
There are also public toilets at locations including Portobello, Broad Bay, Dunedin, Port Chalmers and Back Beach, as well as facilities at many attractions and cafés.
A Great Way to Explore Dunedin
You can start the Dunedin Cycleway wherever suits you, ride the section you want, stop for food or attractions, and use the Port To Port Bike Ferry to cross the harbour. Whether you are visiting for a few hours or making a full day of it, the Otago Harbour Cycle Loop combines cycling, scenery, wildlife, history, cafés and a memorable boat trip in one Dunedin experience.
